that students and teachers from sandy hook elementary will not actually be going back to school until january, after winter break. there were also funerals today for two more 6 year olds. jessica rekos and james mattioli. we'll have more on those memorials later on in our show. first, we wanted to bring you the very latest that we know about the investigation. our national correspondent susan candiotti has new details. she is outside the lanza home tonight. susan, what can you tell us, the very latest that you have been able to figure out about why this happened? >> reporter: well, i'll tell you, if the shooter in this case was trying to erase his digital footprint, he may have succeeded. because investigators are telling us that that smashed computer that you referred to was so badly damaged, presumably by the shooter himself, that they are having a hard time retrieving data from the hard drive. but they're not giving up. they're still working on it because they want to try to examine it for any e-mails he might have sent, for any writings he left behind, to learn about any websites that he

to school today of course with the exception of sandy hook elementary. the students of sandy hook will go back to school after the holidays in a different building some eight miles away, with 20 bright young faces missing from the halls and classrooms. everything is different now. the children of this town are facing a new reality, doing things they never should have to do at this young age. like writing good-bye letters to their friends. we told you last night about 6-year-old jack pinto who was buried yesterday. at the funeral, a note from his friend john reads, jack, you are my best friend. we had fun together. i will miss you. i will talk to you in my prayers. i love you, jack. love, john." there were two more funerals for two more 6-year-old children. jessica rekos and james mattioli were laid to rest today. we will remember them and tonight we honor them. our hearts and thoughts are with their families and their friends. and we wish peace and strength for all the people whose lives jessica and james touched in just six short years. james mattioli was known as jay. just 6 years old,

still in mourning, students in newtown went back to school. everyone but the sandy hook kids who will return after the winter break to school in a neighboring town. sandra endo has that part of the story. >> reporter: the first day back to school in newtown. children returning to classes tuesday and the painful reminder of those who could not. on the bus ride to school, grief was a constant reminder. >> i noticed it was quiet because people were thinking about the tragedy that happened. >> reporter: at schools teachers and students spent time to reflect. >> they just talked about how things will get better than they are now. i felt safe because when your teachers talk to and comfort you about everything that happened. >> reporter: for students at sandy hook elementary, the next time they'll return to will be in the new year. newtown superintendent says teachers and students need more time to deal with the trauma and get used to the new space in a neighboring town. state and local officials had no estimate on attendance for newtown's first day back at school. but returning to a ro
